Venezuela Overview
Venezuela is a nation of diversity. Situated on the northeast corner of South America, the country features miles of white sandy beaches along the Caribbean coast and lays claim to more than a dozen islands and archipelagos. Mountainous rainforests echo with exotic birds and an array of unusual wildlife. This fascinating country also boasts South America’s largest lake, the continent’s third longest river, and the world’s highest waterfall—the impressive Angel’s Falls—yet is also one of the most urbanized countries in South America.
Most Venezuelans live in the northern cities, especially Caracas, the national capital. At 3,000 feet (914 meters) above sea level, Caracas is nestled in an extensive valley—flanked by Avila National Park on one side and rugged suburban hills on the other. Valencia is an economic center west of Caracas that contains the country’s most important manufacturing and industrial companies. Located on the coast of northwestern Venezuela, Maracaibo is a major petroleum-shipping center and home to the Zulianos (people of the Zulia province), known for their sense of humor and improvisational folk music on four-string guitars and maracas. But no matter where you teach English, you’ll be embraced by the Venezuelan fun-loving lifestyle.

Because of its proximity to the Equator, Venezuela experiences little fluctuation in temperature. There are two distinct seasons: wet and dry. The dry season lasts from December to April, while the wet season is from May to November. Caracas has a tropical climate, with summer temperatures averaging 71°F (22°C) in July and winter temperatures averaging 68°F (20°C) in January. Valencia also enjoys a mild climate year-round, with summer temperatures averaging 77°F (25°C) and winter temperatures averaging 75°F (24°C). Maracaibo averages 82°F (28°C) in the summer and 78°F (26°C) in the winter.
