  Teaching English in Oman

With over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of tranquil beaches, rugged mountains,
spectacular sand dunes, and rich natural resources, Oman is a pearl of the Middle East.

In public schools throughout Oman, English is taught as a second language beginning in fourth grade. Older students want to learn the language to travel abroad, better understand diverse cultures, and to pursue a higher education and secure desired jobs. The language is also used throughout the country’s service industry, and plays a key role in Oman’s modernization and national development.

Native-speaking English teachers are a rarity in Oman, so there is a constant demand for foreign teachers. Many schools offer attractive benefits for EFL teachers, including free housing, reimbursed airfare, and exceptional pay compared to living expenses. In fact, the typical English teacher’s salary is about double the cost of living, so it is possible for teachers to save a significant amount of money while exploring all that Oman has to offer!

Oman Overview

Lined with almost 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of coastline, the Sultanate of Oman is considered the Middle East’s best-kept secret. The country is situated on the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and has grown increasingly wealthy since the discovery of oil 30 years ago. Its topography is diverse and spectacular, with rugged mountains and impressive canyons in the north, vast sand dunes in the central interior and lush green hills with crystal waters in the south.

The second largest country in Arabia, Oman was once so secluded that the gates to the capital city Muscat were actually closed from evening until dawn. Decades later, Oman has shed its shell of mystery, but continues to maintain its sense of tranquility despite its growing wealth and development. Muscat, a thriving port on the Gulf of Oman, is home to Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and his breathtaking palace framed with ancient forts. The Omani people, whose lives center on the religion of Islam, take pride in their history and heritage, and are well-known for their generosity and kindness.
