  Teaching English in China

With a population of over one billion, a territory spanning nearly 4 million square miles (10 million square km)
and a history lasting over 5,000 years, China is less like a country and more like its own world.

With more people learning English than the entire population of the U.S., TEFL teachers are in incredibly high demand in China. The country´s increasingly globalized economy and rapidly expanding tourism industries require that most Chinese have a good command of the English language. And in a heavily foreign business environment, students need English skills in order to become competitive and successful in their future careers.

TEFL teachers in China can enjoy great benefits such as free housing, excellent pay and reimbursed airfare with most placements. In addition, many employers offer free Mandarin lessons to help English teachers more comfortably navigate daily life. China’s low cost of living will also enable you to immerse yourself in the culture and unique beauty of this vast country—and perhaps even walk away with a decent savings!

China Overview
China is the gigantic landmass that dominates southeastern Asia. As the fourth biggest country in the world, it has the globe's largest population and most spoken language-Mandarin Chinese. China has had a long and powerful history, and the country is rising quickly into modern times. The Chinese consider their ancient traditions a normal part of modern life, a combination with creates an intriguing atmosphere of old and new. China's larger cities have embraced Western culture, and visitors can expect to see historical sites and famous fashion districts in the same day. Further inland, however, traditional customs prevail and local communities remain many steps behind Western modernization, often by choice.

Joe Davis
Teaching in Shangyu and Cixi, China

“I had a wonderful experience last summer teaching conversational English in China. I spent two weeks teaching fifth grade students in the city of Shangyu, then two weeks teaching high school seniors in the city of Cixi. Both assignments were challenging, but very rewarding. I found the Chinese students to be very respectful, eager to learn, and very well disciplined.

“This program not only allowed me to learn about their schools and educational programs but also about the Chinese culture. Although my assignment was only short-term, it was a wonderful opportunity and an experience I will never forget. Thank you again BridgeTEFL.”

China covers vast territory with complex topography, so the weather differs greatly from region to region. The southeast, below the Nanling Mountains, tends to be very wet with high temperatures year-round. In the central Yangtze and Huaihe river valleys, there are four distinct seasons with hot summers, cold winters, and rain throughout the year. The dry north experiences a short but sunny summer with long, cold winters. Most of the south-central coast around Shanghai is humid and experiences heavy rains in the summer.
